    As I've gotten older I've come away from the very granular systems toward simpler ones. I still like rules, but I like rules that are simple and flexible and act as a framework. Advantage and Disadvantage is a GREAT example of one of these. "Roll to beat the DC" and advantage/disadvantage can, with a bit of out of the box thinking, cover about 90% of the challenges you put in front of your party that aren't going to be simply roleplayed through. I remember running a simplified D&D session I ran for new players where they started as captives on an evil empire's airship flying over a lost world type jungle where they'd be set to work as slaves. Suddenly, the ship is attacked by the deadly wildlife; feral harpies and an unseen dragon flying in the clouds. The PCs broke their chains, defeated some guards, picked the locked door and got onto the deck, struggled to keep their footing as the ship tilted and shook, fired a ballista at the harpies, tangled one in the rigging, held on for dear life as the dragon blew a hole in the deck and the ship went down in flames, crashing in the forest and starting the campaign... All of this with those two mechanics, which were super easy to explain and apply to new players. Just basic attack rolls and ability checks, advantage applied when the PCs worked together, disadvantage when complications arose (like the rolling deck) you can work in various variants, but simple + flexible is GOD when it comes to rules.

    Loads of options with complicated, granular mechanics make a lot of sense in a video game. Not so much in a TTRPG where you have a real person who can adjudicate what happens. But WotC wants to tap into video game mentality to sell digital tools and subs. Give me a simple, pen and paper game any day. (In other words, I agree with PDM on this.)

    The part about being a GM making you a better player is absolutely true. When it comes time to invite someone new to my table someone with GM exp has a much better chance as I know they will be a better player and there is a chance I might get to play on off weeks.

    Unless theres an aspect of powering up monster CR compared to party level, this whole book seems like universal power creep. One thing to add to the "my character isnt good at that so I cant do it" idea is that failing checks and falling short in combat can be fun if you have the right attitude, plus the right DM.

    Very nice! I like the look of LTFP though I’m not sure I could get my game group to try a new system. It took me forever to convince them to give the AGE system a try after I got tired of running 5E. I like these small adventure books for LTFP puts out because they look like they can easily be plugged into another system. Seems like a great source of inspiration.

    I have always been super excited for the release of a new DnD edition, but not this time. This just seems completely uninspired and even a little lazy (I'm sure they put in a lot of work and hours but it seems to lack any creative effort). I wrapped up my OSE game and now we're playing DCCRPG and having a blast. My group will be passing on the new dnd.

    WoTC/Hasbro officially allowed you to do what you could already do.... Yeah so "good" of them to "let" you do that. The parts of the ruleset that you cannot use without permission now, the trademarked things, are NOT covered under the CC license, so this is just PR to appease people that didnt know rulesets cannot be copywritten. What a giant nothing burger.

    "I remember when druid was a subclass of cleric, but now druid gets its own subclasses, which I guess would be sub-subclasses??" It was at this moment that this man revealed himself to be a D&D boomer and showed that his opinions on the topic were irrelevant. If you want old-school D&D, just play old-school D&D. For what it's worth, I'm not interested in this new edition either. Recently, Wizards has been taking the mechanics that are more fun to crunch mechanically and been making them more roleplay-based (see most of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything) and makaing the elements that are more fun to roleplay out more crunchy and mechanical (that is TOO many spells). But "back in my day, things was different" is not a valid reason to like or _especially_ not to dislike something. Compare a thing to its peers and show why it's better or worse, don't make decisions based on nostalgia.

    "Players think they can only do what the character sheet says" is because GM's in the past have penalised them for not having it on their sheet. The "um actually" crowd is a bane on TTRPGs

  • @michaelwebb3827

    If people want to play Purple Worms and their group digs that it is cool for them; but I don't understand the desire to have the game evolve in this way where none of those choices mean anything other than an alternate skin for them to sell you on the VTT. I didn't like the way they implemented it in Tasha's, and this further cemented my lack of interest in playing any D&D other than BECMI or 1E/2E AD&D. The effect in has on world building is just bizarre to me, to me, if you are going to have wondrous stuff, write it in, make it rare, and make it special; I don't understand how anyone finds this implementation satisfying. Granularity is a side conversation, and one I don't think people appreciate enough. It's why I've migrated to progressively simpler systems as I've gotten older and more experienced; I just don't find the juice worth the squeeze in terms of actual enjoyment around the table. Having everything codified and laid out with layers upon layers of nuance makes things more fair in a sort of idealistic tournament sense, but it doesn't make the game more satisfying or fun to me, and it definitely slows it way down.

      PDM isn't a dnd hater, he just prefers the moldvay version of the game to the modern interpretation and prefers even more to modify the rules to what best suits his group. Once you realise that you are not beholden to the edition sellers of WotC the hobby opens up limitless potential

    I agree the new Player’s Handbook is a buffet for players and some people will eat it up, while others will never consider playing now. The game is not looking Dungeon Master friendly, so few people will do it. Level 11 to 20 should just be removed, as the game doesn’t support it. Thanks for your perspective.

    I think I'm pretty much in agreement with everything you said. I've got zero interest in this edition. I'm currently running a Pathfinder 1e campaign because the experience was a Christmas present for my wife from a couple years ago. Personally, I hate feats and the tons of conditions and thinking of character as "builds" (gives me the creeps just thinking about it). I don't want to pour over character options across dozens of books for hours, trying to find THE right combination and it sounds like this edition is the start of that very thing. I remember thinking in 3e D&D, "So I can't rush at a character if I don't have Bull Rush? Doesn't this put artificial limits on my creativity?", and I hated it. I also hated the spell system in 5e. All of the spells did very specific things. They took most/all of the wiggle room out of the spell descriptions, and that's what I lived for. It gave me the freedom to do crazy, interesting things. 5e stripped out all that. I have to hope that 5.5 put some of it back, though I have my doubts. I understand that it probably made it easy for Adventure League play, to keep things consistent across tables, but I didn't do any of that. Instead, I got a stripped down system that made me dislike playing the cleric. I've also completely lost patience with Hasbro. They've burned every last bridge, I'm done with the company. There are other games that better tickle my itch if I want level-based, dungeon delving gameplay that encourage player creativity and I feel a lot less icky spending money on them. I'm playing or running those games instead.

  • @zachreuter2117
    @zachreuter2117 10 часов назад

    I think the new edition is improving upon what we already have and making all the classes feel more distinct and to have unique choices instead of "I go up and attack." Giving options creates choices and complexity, but the tradeoff can be the creative blinders come on UNLESS the GM explicity tells their players "Hey, you can try stuff even if its not on your character sheet if its cool and makes sense and you roll well it can happen!" I think there can be a marriage between the two ideas of rules and options vs creative freedom and rule of cool. The two balance each other, use the rules and options to facilitate what is reasonable with the rule of cool and incorporate creativity into the core ruleset. Too many people think it has to be one way or the other which isnt true at all, you have to cater to your table/players/playstyle and make it fun for you and your players. There's no catch all!
